Indonesia is set to expound on the importance of cooperation in handling and overcoming radicalism and terrorism during the 27th ASEAN Summit (KTT ASEAN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
According to Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, radicals continue to act around the globe, with the latest incident taking place in Mali, where gunmen claimed to be affiliated with the radical Islamic group al Qaeda indiscriminately shot and killed at least 21 people at a hotel in the nation's capital of Bamako.
'We have communicated with our personnel in Mali and ensured that all Indonesian citizens are safe,' said Retno in Kuala Lumpur on Friday night as quoted by Antara news agency.
She said that President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo would also discuss the aforementioned issues during his bilateral meetings on the sidelines of KTT ASEAN, included with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Jokowi is also set to attend bilateral meetings with the heads of state of New Zealand, Japan and Vietnam.
Retno added that at least three documents would be signed during the summit, included ones related to the handling of human trafficking and the stability of the ASEAN Economic Community.
Jokowi is scheduled to attend the opening of KTT ASEAN on Saturday at 9 a.m. The opening ceremony will be followed by a summit plenary meeting.
According to presidential communications team member Ari Dwipayana, Jokowi would also attend the 18th ASEAN-China Summit, the 18th ASEAN Plus Three (South Korea, Japan and China) Summit and the third ASEAN-US Summit.
The signing of a charter between Indonesia and Malaysia for the establishment of a palm-oil-producing countries' board is also on Jokowi's agenda in Kuala Lumpur. (kes)
