The House of Representatives ethics council is set to hold an internal meeting on Monday, in which it will make a decision over a code of ethics violation allegedly committed by House Speaker Setya Novanto.
The meeting is a follow-up of a report submitted by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said to the ethics council on Nov. 16.
'Today's meeting is an internal meeting to discuss the results of a verification of the minister's report,' House ethics council deputy speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said, as quoted by kompas.com on Monday.
He said the documents for the report, containing a transcript and audio recording file of an alleged conversation between Setya, oil businessman Riza Chalid and gold and copper mining company PT Freeport Indonesia president director Maroef Sjamsoeddin, was verified by an expert from the House ethics council.
Sufmi said at Monday's meeting, the ethics council would determine whether or not Sudirman's report could be followed up. It would also be decided whether the trial of the case would be open or closed to the public.
As reported earlier, Sudirman reported Setya for alleged ethics violations to the House ethics council on Nov.16. The House speaker was accused of having misused the names of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla and attempted to trade governmental favors for shares in Freeport Indonesia.
The conversation transcript handed over by Sudirman suggests that Setya promised to facilitate in negotiations on the extension of Freeport's mining contract, which expires in 2021, provided that Freeport gave 11 percent of the shares to President Jokowi and 9 percent to Vice President Kalla.
Setya also reportedly asked Freeport to give him shares in an electricity project in Timika, Papua. The House speaker also allegedly asked Freeport to become not only an investor but also the buyer of electricity produced by the power plant. (ebf)
