A lawyer representing House of Representatives speaker Setya Novanto, Firman Wijaya, has said his team is still examining the authenticity of a controversial audio recording of a conversation between his client, an energy businessman and an executive of giant gold and copper miner PT Freeport Indonesia.

Firman said that as well as verifying the authenticity of the recording, Setya'€™s legal team was also examining the legality of wiretapping, through which method the audio recording was obtained, based on the 2008 law on electronics and information transactions (ITE).

'€œIt is prohibited to wiretap without the proper authority,'€ Firman told reporters at the House complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday.

He was referring to an audio recording and its transcript of a conversation between Setya, oil businessman M.Riza Chalid and Freeport president director Maroef Sjamsoeddin, during which the House speaker allegedly mentioned the names of President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla and attempted to trade government favors for shares in the mining company.

It was reported that Maroef had secretly recorded the conversation and handed the audio recording to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said, who filed a report against Setya to the House ethics council on Nov.16.

'€œThere have been different versions of transcripts of the conversation recording. This shows the importance of efforts to verify the authenticity of evidence. Evidence must be convincing,'€ said Firman.

It was reported on Friday that Setya would report Sudirman to the National Police Criminal Investigation Corps (Bareskrim) over the minister'€™s report, though Firman said he and his fellow lawyers had not yet done so.

'€œWe haven'€™t yet filed the report to the police. We are still examining the procedures. We also want to examine [the minister'€™s report to ethics council] first,'€ Firman said. (ebf)(+)
