Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama complied with the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) on Monday to explain the legal status of the land on which the Sumber Waras hospital is built.
"The BPK invited me to provide details related to the hospital and the disputed land," Ahok said.
Besides examining the governor, the BPK questioned other administration officials, such as the regional secretary, the former Jakarta Development Planning Board (Bappeda) head and the Jakarta Financial and Asset Management Board (BPKAD) head, according to Ahok.
Previously, a panel of judges handed over a certificate for a 32,372-square-meter plot of land to the Sumber Waras Foundation after a court verdict paved the way for the Jakarta administration to build a cancer hospital on adjacent land.
The land dispute began in November 1970 when then Candra Naya Social Organization (PSCN) head Padmo Sumasto granted the land to Sumber Waras, a decision that had been allegedly made without approval from the other PSCN members. It was claimed that the PSCN had canceled the land handover during a meeting in September 1999.
Years later the dispute escalated after one of the country's richest women, Kartini Muljadi, became head of the Sumber Waras Foundation.
The foundation, which held a certificate for land adjacent to the disputed plot, sold the 3.7-hectare plot to the city administration for Rp 775.69 billion (US$53.2 million) for a cancer hospital to be built on it. However, without also purchasing the disputed land, the city administration would have no access to the main road, Jl. Kyai Tapa.
In addition to the decade-long dispute between the PSCN and Sumber Waras, the city administration also received a report from the BPK declaring that the land purchase was too expensive because the land was not located on Jl. Kyai Tapa. (dan)(+)
