Indonesia AirAsia X launched its maiden flight from Jakarta to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday, in order to cater to the Umrah (minor or lesser pilgrimage) passenger market.

The inaugural flight departed Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 1 a.m. and arrived at King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah at 7.30 a.m. local time.

"We are now able to serve the Jakarta-Jeddah route after having met all requirements of the General Authority of Civil Aviation in Saudi Arabia, which included safety and security audits," said Indonesia AirAsia X CEO Dendy Kurniawan in a press release on Monday.

The flight will be available two times per week, departing from both Jakarta and Jeddah every Monday and Wednesday. For this route, the airline has scheduled an Airbus A330-300 which boasts 12 premium flatbed seats and 365 economy seats as well as a complementary in-flight meal, comfort kit and luggage services.

In addition to the new Jakarta-Jeddah route, the budget carrier currently serves two other international routes: Denpasar-Sydney and Denpasar-Melbourne. (kes)(+)
