he Langkat Police in North Sumatra have arrested two police personnel from Karo and Binjai regencies for allegedly abducting and extorting money from a local cigarette businessman.

The two suspects, Brig. Gen. Ngamanken Sitepu, 41, from Karo Police and Adj. First Insp. Chief Warrant Officer Ikhwan Harahap, 40, from Binjai Police, were arrested together with two civilians, Novrizal, 34, of Binjai and M. Fuad Firdaus of Medan.

Langkat Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Dwi Asmoro said on Wednesday the four suspects, who demanded Rp 100 million (US$7,450) in ransom from the businessman'€™s family, were being held at Langkat Police headquarters for interrogation.

'€œPolice are still building the case. We want to find out how many times the two police members have been involved in kidnapping and extortion cases,'€ Dwi said.
