Your letters: Academic pressure on adolescents

S

urely every teen is worried about their body image, being popular, and being the first in class. Nonetheless teens face huge stress around academic studies, athletic performance and other areas. They are pressured early on to do everything right, to get into the best school. As a way to escape from their pressurized lives, stress may lead teens to use drugs or consume alcohol.

Worries take precedence over everything, which exist as difficulties at school, family problems, financial problems, problems in the surroundings, death of a loved one, etc. During school years, adolescents tend to have high expectations concerning their future independent lives. Students go through crucial academic subjects with numerous deadlines to meet, managing time, class competitiveness, peer pressure, family expectations, adequate sleep and constantly striving for perfection. The problem is that students fail to realize the significance of maintaining a balance between studying and non-study activities.

Firstly, stress is any kind of physical or emotional pressure exerted on the brain, including too much disappointment to the extent of depression. In today'€™s world, stress is one of the leading causes of death as it is linked to coronary disease, cancer, lung ailments, obesity and cirrhosis of the liver. These negative connotations also cause inner dissatisfaction, constant worry, adverse thoughts, frustration, headaches and anxiety.

A certain amount of stress is useful for studying. It assists students to work harder and be more focused. However, being too stressed leads to ineffective studying. It is important to distinguish between stress that assists you to study and stress that prevents you from studying. Mostly students have their minds racing everywhere when they try to study, and when they get a chance to relax, all they can think about is studying. Both studying and relaxing is legitimate and necessary.
