ndonesia'€™s men topped Group C at the Asian Team Badminton Championships in Hyderabad, India, after defeating Chinese Taipei 3-2.

The seven-day tournament also serves as a qualifying round for the upcoming 29th Thomas Cup and 26th Uber Cup championships, which will be held in Kunshan, Jiangsu, China on May 15-22.

The Thomas Cup is the world'€™s men'€™s team championship while the Uber Cup is for women.

Indonesia'€™s men reaped their wins through doubles Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan, Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi and singles player Ginting Anthony.

Ahsan/Hendra won 23-21, 21-15 against Sheng Mu Lee/Chia Hsin Tsai. Angga/Ricky chalked up a 21-19, 21-18 win over Hung Ling Chen/Chi-Lin Wang while Ginting struggled past Jen Hao Hsu 21-9, 17-21, 21-14.

It was Indonesia'€™s third win in as many matches, with Thailand and Maldives being their previous victims.

'€œWe played much better today as we managed to secure the ball accurately, allowing us to attack comfortably,'€ said Angga as quoted by the Indonesian Badminton Association'€™s (PBSI) website, badmintonindonesia.org.

Indonesia lost points through Tommy Sugiarto and Christie Jonatan who were beaten by Chen Chou 25-23, 21-16 and Tzu Wei Wang 21-16, 21-18 respectively.

Chinese Taipei was in second place, followed by Thailand and winless Maldives.

In the women'€™s competition, Indonesia easily won 5-0 against Maldives.

Maria Febe Kusumastuti, Lindaweni Fanetri and Hana Ramadhini in the singles overpowered Moosa Aminath Shahurunaz 21-3, 21-4, Aishath Afnaan Rasheed 21-12, 21-6, and, Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq 21-11, 21-9 respectively.

In the doubles, Anggia Shitta Awanda/Ni Ketut Mahadewi Istirani and Della Destiara Haris/Rosyita Eka Putri Sari were too strong for their opponents. The former trounced Aminath Ahmed Didi/Maisa Fathuhulla Ismail 21-7, 21-5 and the latter made light work of Aminath Nabeeha Abdul Razzaq/Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq 21-5, 21-4.

PBSI head of development Rexy Mainaky said that the women'€™s team had delivered as expected.

'€œThey played against a team that is not on the same level,'€ he said, adding that the win could be a morale booster for their next match against South Korea.

'€œThe team has tested the courts, which is important when facing Korea,'€ he said. The Korean match was held late Thursday.

Indonesia was expecting three points, two in the doubles and one in the singles. Indonesia was placed in second place behind Korea on the provisional standings. Maldives was in third position.

At Kunshan, Indonesia will aim for a place in the semifinals for the men'€™s team, while a place in the top eight will be the women'€™s team'€™s realistic target.

The Hyderabad tournament also provides points for players to improve their places in the world rankings, which will subsequently weigh on their qualifications for the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August.
