A

joint search and rescue team has so far failed to find a Russian national, identified only as Hildar, who is reportedly missing on Mount Agung in Karangasem regency, Bali.

'€œWe have reached the area, approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, but we haven'€™t found any sign of him,'€ Karangasem National Search and Rescue Agency head Ida Bagus Surya Wirawan told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Wirawan said that the weather was extremely bad and rain and fog were limiting vision. '€œWe decided to return to base and continue the search tomorrow.'€

The 38-year-old man was reported missing on Wednesday after his friend who was staying in Kuta was unable to contact him.

The head of Karangasem Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Ida Ketut Arimbawa, said Hildar started hiking one of the highest mountains on the island on Sunday. '€œHe went hiking alone without a guide accompanying him,'€ he said.

'€œThe team has checked the point from where he last made contact with his friend. He may have tried a new track and not taken the official track, and then got lost. His mobile phone could be running out of battery,'€ he added.
