Islands in focus: Kalimantan'€™s longest bridge inaugurated

P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo inaugurated the Tayan Kasih Bridge, which crosses the Kapuas River in Tayan Hillir district and connects West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.

West Kalimantan Governor Cornelis said the bridge was expected to improve the movement of people and goods from Kalimantan to Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.

The Tayan Kasih Bridge is a main feature of the trans-Kalimantan infrastructure project. The 1.4-kilometer bridge is the longest in Kalimantan and is the second longest in Indonesia after the Suramadu Bridge in Surabaya, East Java.

An economic observer named Maran said the bridge would improve the mobility of people to and from Sarawak in Malaysia as the bridge also connected the trans-Kalimantan roads to the Border Crossing Inspection Post in Entikong.

'€œThe traffic of people from Kalimantan to Malaysia is very high. People go there for holiday, shopping, or medical purposes,'€ said Maran, who is a lecturer at the Widya Dharma Economic Academy in Pontianak.
