PDI-P selection process goes on, Risma touted

span style="letter-spacing: 0.1px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is continuing its process to choose a candidate for next year's Jakarta gubernatorial elections, amid increasing speculation that popular Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini would pose a tough challenge to Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.
Risma, however, is not on the list of 34 gubernatorial hopefuls that have passed the administrative section of the Jakarta PDI-P's selection.
Among those who are on the list are Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat, PDI-P Jakarta branch chairman Boy Sadikin, former law and human rights minister Yusril Izha Mahendra, businessman Sandiaga Uno, City Council Deputy Speaker Abraham “Lulung” Lunggana and struggling politician Hasnaeni.
PDI-P candidate selection team deputy chairman Gembong Warsono told thejakartapost.com on Tuesday that the 34 hopefuls would undergo psychological tests on Wednesday.
The test structure and questions will be prepared by the Indonesian Association of Psychologists (HIMPSI), Gembong said.
“We will use HIMPSI’s recommendations to pass deserving candidates to the next stage,” said Gembong, adding that those who passed would go on to screenings.
Last week, supporters of Risma launched a movement through Twitter as a means to drum up support.
The PDI-P denies there is a move to support Risma, but Gembong stressed that Risma still had a chance of being nominated as the Jakarta gubernatorial candidate if she was assigned by the party central executive board.
Explaining the process of candidate selection by the party, Gembong said after the selection process ended, his team would recommend a certain number of candidates to the PDI-P central board, but the board would not consider only those candidates.
“Therefore, other figures like Tri Rismaharini and even Ahok still have a chance of becoming the PDIP candidate as long as they are appointed by the central board,” he added. (bbn)
