The city administration has vowed to keep all Transjakarta bus lanes free of private vehicles, starting next week.
Governor Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama had requested traffic police to “never let any [unauthorized] vehicles enter the Transjakarta lanes, no matter how bad the traffic jam is,” Jakarta Transportation Agency head Andri said at City Hall on Friday following a meeting on the matter.
The policy aimed to force motorists – car and motorcycle users -- to leave their private vehicles at home and use public transportation, Andri added.
Andri said the administration would increase the number of personnel -- traffic police and Public Order Agency officers -- to tighten law enforcement. “Anyone who dares to invade the bus lane will be fined up to Rp 500,000 (US$38),” Andri said.
“If the Transjakarta lanes are kept free from other vehicles, they can be used by fire engines or ambulances in times of emergency,” Andri said. (bbn)
