he Law and Human Rights Ministry has announced a plan to build a maximum security prison on Nusakambangan Island, Cilacap, Central Java, to house high-risk inmates.
It will be designed to detain and limit the movement of people convicted of terrorism and drug crimes, the ministry's director general for correctional facilities, I Wayan Kusmiantha Dusak, said.
"Construction will begin this year with additional funding from the revised 2016 state budget of Rp 1.3 trillion [US$97.78 million]," Dusak said as quoted by Antara news agency.
In addition, the ministry plans to upgrade four penitentiaries on Nusakambangan to boost their capacity, which will also be financed with funds from the state budget, Dusak said.
Prison capacity will be increased from 200 to 1,000 people, he said. (afr/bbn)
