Jakarta Fair kicks off with fireworks display

maginificent display of fireworks marked the opening of the 49th Jakarta Fair on Friday. The annual event will be held from June 10 to July 17 at the Kemayoran Fair Ground in Central Jakarta.
Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, and JI Expo managing director Prajna Murdaya jointly opened the event.
Organizers expect five million of visitors this year, hoping that transactions will reach Rp 5.8 trillion (US$436.58 million).
"The number 489 is a lucky number according to Hokkien language. I hope we all have full wallets and can shop at the Jakarta Fair," Ahok said jokingly at the opening ceremony, referring to the fact that this year is Jakarta's 489th anniversary .
Ahok said he hoped that the event would boost city's economy and that many visitors would celebrate the Idul Fitri holday at the venue.
A total of 2,700 companies have booths at Jakarta Fair and approximately 150 musicians have been invited to entertain shoppers. (bbn)
