oordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto has reiterated the government’s call to lawmakers to immediately complete the deliberation of terror law revision that is expected to provide law enforcers stronger legal basis in combating terrorism.

"We will follow-up the progress. We expect the terror bill to be concluded in the near future so that law enforcers have room to maneuver in combating terrorism,” Wiranto told the journalists in Jakarta on Monday, adding that the support from the general public and non-governmental organizations was also important.

The country needs to build a comprehensive defense mechanism against terrorism that threatens national interests, he stressed.

The approval of the bill into law is needed because the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) cannot work alone in anticipating terrorist threats, he said.

While the deliberation of the Terrorism Law revision is still taking place in the House of Representatives, human rights activists have expressed rejection of the involvement of the Indonesian Military in fighting terrorism, fearing abuse of power.

Wiranto’s predecessor, Luhut Panjaitan, insisted that the stronger military role would not push the TNI to regain the power it held under late dictator Soeharto's New Order regime. (bbn)
