transportation expert has criticized the government for issuing a regulation on application-based car services due to its complicated requirements for drivers, who mostly drive their own cars.
Roadworthy tests, for example, are not necessary when the car owners regularly take their vehicles to the workshop for repairs even though they are not required to do so, Ofyar Z. Tamin of the Bandung Institute of Technology told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
Ofyar referred to Transportation Ministry Regulation No. 32/2016 on application-based public transportation without fixed routes.
The drivers argued that due to test requirements, existing insurance for their vehicles would become invalid since they would then be operating full public transportation vehicles.
More complicated rulings exist within requirements for the drivers, most of whom are car owners, in that they are told to change ownership status to cooperatives that become operators of application-based services like Grab Car, Go-Car and Uber, Ofyar added.
On Monday, hundreds of application-based drivers demonstrated at the House of Representatives to demand revocation of the ministry regulation. (rez/bbn)
