ank Indonesia (BI) aims to finish ATM switching and debit card transaction interoperability in 2017 to facilitate people in transferring money to all banks via ATM, while card swipe machines will be able to accept debit cards from all banks.
"Card swipe machines are a bit easier because right now some bank's card swipe machines are able to receive other banks card. For ATMs, we have to ensure switching operators are using the same protocol," BI deputy governor Ronald Waas said at BI’s office on Friday.
There are four switching companies in the country, ATM Bersama (87 banks), Prima (60 bank members), ALTO (18 bank members), and Link (four bank members). However, BI will not force a merger.
"They will still exist and with this interoperability, there will be no reason for high switching costs," he said.
The State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) Ministry is interested in creating another switching company because the current “Link” for state banks is operated by Telkom, Ronald said, adding if realized, the new switching company would have to work within the interoperability protocol. (bbn)
