he US government through the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) will provide assistance to state-owned railway company KAI through a US $515,000 grant to carry out a feasibility study on railway maintenance in 2017.
“With a modernized maintenance system, the 150-year old route will be able to increase speed while maintaining safety,” KAI logistics and development director Budi Noviantoro said at the US deputy ambassador’s house after a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing on Friday.
He added that the study would focus on the northern route from Jakarta to Surabaya with total length of 727 kilometers.
USTDA Asia regional manager Mark Dunn said the study be carried out of a year.
"The outcome will be various recommendations and training to KAI staff to then act on and go for maintenance of the track and then developing a maintenance plan;" Dunn told The Jakarta Post.
KAI will select five of its employees for the training next year. In 2011, the USTDA provided assistance to KAI for the development of a signaling and communication system for the Jakarta-Bogor-Tangerang-Bekasi route. (bbn)
