he government has reiterated its commitment to use clean coal to reduce emissions by 29 percent in 2019 by requiring coal-fired power producers to use low-emissions technology, a top official has said.

"The government requires power plants with above 600 megawatts (MW) of capacity to use super critical technology and 1,000 MW power plants to use ultra-super critical technology," Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry's director general of electricity Jarman said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The government also decided to cap coal portions in energy mix at 50 percent in 2025, renewable energy at 25 percent and gas at 24 percent, with oil to be slashed only 1 percent, Jarman added.

To increase the electrification ratio up to 97.35 percent in 2019, the government has continued to use coal-based power plants to support the country's electricity system, as the purchase price of electricity from coal is still the cheapest compared to other types of fuel.

Indonesia‘s coal reserves are still very abundant, with proven reserves at 29.48 billion tons.

"The government will build power plants with the installed capacity of 35,000 MW in 2019, of which  coal-fired power plants contribute to 56.97 percent of total capacity," he went on, adding that with this project, the coal demand, which is currently at 87.7 million tons, is expected to double to 166.2 million tons in 2019.
