State port operator Pelindo III is seeking to aid the development of tourism in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province by building passenger terminals to facilitate tourists.
The terminals will be built in NTT’s capital Kupang, as well as in Ende, Kalabahi, Maumere, Ippi and Waingapu.
The Maumere terminal had its groundbreaking ceremony at the L. Say Port on Friday, marking the first development stage among all terminals.
“We will build the terminals whenever [the towns are] ready,” Pelindo III president director Orias P. Moedak said on Friday.
The terminals are expected to be completed in 2018, although the one in Maumere might finish sooner at the end of next year. Construction of the terminals will cost the company Rp 30 billion (US$2.2 million) to Rp 50 billion.
The Maumere passenger terminal will have the capacity to accommodate 1,000 people, while the others will be able to handle 700 people.
However, Orias said Pelindo also sought cooperation from the local administration, especially in terms of tourist destinations.
“Don’t let the tourists just stop at the terminals. Prepare some attractions at the destinations because the arriving ships can take 3,000 to 4,000 passengers,” he said.
Pelindo III plans to build a total of 11 passenger terminals next year, including the six terminals in NTT.
