plane operated by Wings Air – a subsidiary of politically wired Rusdi Kirana’s company Lion Air – overshot the runway at Ahmad Yani Airport, Semarang, on Sunday evening.
"At 6:24 p.m., a Wings Air IW-1896 plane en route from Bandung to Semarang experienced an overshoot at Semarang during landing," Lion Air Group president director Edward Sirait said in a statement.
The ATR 72-600 plane, arriving from Bandung, was carrying 68 passengers and four flight crew members. All of the passengers and crew were safely evacuated from the plane.
At the moment, he further said, it was rainy in Semarang. However, the company will have to wait for the results of the National Transportation Safety Commission's (KNKT) investigation into the incident.
Based on its latest report, the KNKT investigated 41 flight incidents in 2016, compared to only 28 incidents last year, indicating worsening conditions in the aviation industry. Today’s incident increases that number to 42 cases. (ags)
