akarta gubernatorial candidate Anies Baswedan showed his comedic chops during a live stand-up comedy routine aired on TV Saturday night.
The program, which also invited Anies’ rival, Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, and their respective vice governor candidates, Sandiaga Uno and Djarot Saiful Hidayat, challenged the candidates to deliver jokes in two minutes.
Understanding that he is not a professional comedian, Anies asked the audience to laugh at him before he started his routine.
“I would appreciate it if everyone could laugh because this is hard to do,” said Anies.
He started his routine by saying that Jakartans had made themselves proud as the word nongkrong, which is Indonesian slang for "hanging out," made it to The New York Times website.
“So many young people like to nongkrong these days that The New York Times even defined the word, which according to them means ‘sitting, talking and doing nothing’,” said Anies as the audience giggled.
Anies' jokes caused the audience, which consisted mostly of young adults, to burst out in laughter when he mentioned popular dating app Tinder.
“I’ve been seeing teenagers swiping right on their smartphones, and turns out they were playing with Tinder. I wanted to download it, too, but I didn’t after I found out what the app was for,” said Anies, jokingly adding that he had seen married people use the app. (dea)
