cting Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat has asked the police to take firm stance against residents holding outdoor predawn meal events, also known as sahur, on the road, during Ramadhan, saying it could cause numerous incidents.

Djarot asked the police on Monday to check the licence plates of vehicle belonging to those still carrying out the events.

"We have coordinated with Jakarta Police deputy chief. Those found to conduct such events will be arrested if needed," Djarot said at the City Hall.

During sahur, predawn meals are usually distributed to the needy, but many also marched down streets and became unruly.

Djarot said previously that people attending sahur street events often caused a public nuisance, adding that some travelled in motorcycle convoys without bringing their driving license. (vny/wit)
