mported frozen meat has yet to steal the hearts of Jakartans looking to enjoy beef dishes during this year’s Idul Fitri celebrations as they prefer to buy local fresh meat instead.

Arin Fitriyani, a resident of Simprug, South Jakarta, said she did not mind paying more to get fresh meat to cook rendang (beef simmered in coconut milk and spices).

“Local meat is more tender and faster to cook,” Arin said at Kebayoran Lama market on Saturday.

The fresh meat was sold for Rp 120,000 (US$9) per kg, higher than imported frozen buffalo meat from India at Rp 80,000 per kg.

An imported meat vendor Jack Marpaung said that even though the imported meat price was lower at Rp 80,000 per kg, people still considered it as second option after fresh meat.

“People buy it when they cannot afford local meat, but they still like the meat from freshly slaughtered cows compared to the frozen option,” he said.

Indonesia decided to import buffalo meat from India this year to stabilize the meat price, especially to cater to low- and middle-income consumers.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) forecasts that nationwide meat production will reach 468,369 tons in 2017, while consumption will be higher at 729,911 tons.

Consumption in the Greater Jakarta area is expected to amount to 51,450 tons, whereas local production will only hover at 20,166 tons. (dis/tas)
