he sharia subsidiary of state lender Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), BNI Syariah, has disbursed a loan of Rp 168 billion (US$12.62 million) to operators of the Jakarta-owned bus management company, PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta), to procure additional vehicles.
The financial facility with a seven-year term will be used to buy 300 medium-sized buses to support the larger buses that are operating along the 13 bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors of the capital.
"We hope this agreement will increase BNI Syariah's portfolio in the transportation sector," BNI Syariah acting president director Abdullah Firman Wibowo said in a statement on Tuesday.
The medium-sized buses will be allocated to the feeder service supporting the main BRT corridors to expand Transjakarta's service coverage.
Under the current system, bus operators are paid by Transjakarta based on the rupiah-per-kilometer tariff for each bus.
The Jakarta administration is pushing to replace the older medium-sized buses of private operators in its bid to improve the city's public transportation services.
About 1,500 medium-sized buses are currently operating in Jakarta, of which 628 are new vehicles. (bbn)
