Island focus: Escaped Australian inmate taunts police

S

haun Edward Davidson, an Australian inmate who escaped from Bali’s Kerobokan Penitentiary, has allegedly taunted the Bali Police on Facebook.

Davidson allegedly uploaded a wanted poster on the Facebook account of Matthew Rageone Ridler, believed to be Davidson’s alias. “Have you seen this man?” the poster read.

Davidson’s photo and a fingerprint were included on the poster, which was uploaded on Monday, more than one month after Davidson tunneled his way out of Kerobokan Penitentiary with three other foreign inmates.

Arrested in early 2016 for over-staying his visa on the resort Island, Davidson, who was also found to have used multiple fake identities, entered Bali using an on-arrival visa. At the time he was wanted by Australian Federal Police (AFP) over a drug case.

Davidson has several times updated his status on Facebook with messages taunting police, prompting police to monitor his Facebook page.

“It is still being investigated by the cybercrime team,” said Bali Police deputy chief Brig. Gen. I Gede Alit Widana recently. He also revealed that the police had involved Interpol in their hunt. “Hopefully, it will not take too long to apprehend the two escapees [Davidson and Malaysian national Tee Kok King, another inmate who remains at large],” he added.

Two other inmates, Bulgarian Dimitar Nikolov Iliev and Indian Sayed Muhammad Said, were arrested in Timor Leste four days after their escape.
