ouse of Representatives Deputy Speaker Taufik Kurniawan said a consultation meeting between lawmakers and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on the House’s inquiry plan against the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) would trigger public suspicion of political interests and intervention on the matter.

“It would be counterproductive for the government to have such a meeting,” Taufik said on Tuesday.

The inquiry team tasked with probing the antigraft body sent a letter to the House’s leadership board requesting a meeting with Jokowi to “consult” the findings of the team before the House held a plenary meeting on Sept. 28.

The team’s members said they wanted to explain directly to President Jokowi what they had done and discovered during its 60-day probe. The findings were mainly about violations the KPK had allegedly committed.

Taufik said the House leaders had received the letter and would hold a meeting to decide whether they would send an invitation to Jokowi to attend a consultation meeting.

“There is no regulation, which mentions the team should consult with the President. If the government accepts the invitation, the public may question the objectivity and independence of the government,” said Taufik.

In the Sept.28 meeting, the inquiry team is scheduled to elaborate their findings. The team previously claimed it had found irregularities in the management of KPK financial and human resources and violations of procedures in its anticorruption operations. (ebf)
