esidents in Latu village, a remote area on Seram Island, Maluku, can now buy fuel at an affordable price with the operation of the Amalatu mini gas station (mini SPBU), which will allow the implementation of the government’s one-price fuel policy.

Fuel marketing and distribution senior vice president of state-owned oil company Pertamina, Gigih Wahyu Hari Irianto said that up to now the fuel price in the region could reach Rp 12,000 (88 US cents) per liter. With the mini SPBU, people will be able to buy the fuel at Rp 6,450 per liter.

"This really helps the residents who all this time had to spend a lot of money for the fuel. Now they can buy it at a normal price," Gigih said.

Fuel prices in Latu village were relatively higher than normal prices because the locals had to buy fuel from retailers, who had to buy it from other villages, which were located around 40 to 80 kilometers from Latu village.

"Thank God, now the people can easily get fuel at a cheap price. All this time we have had to spend Rp 11,000 to buy 1 liter of fuel. We're glad that now we have our own mini SPBU," said Arif Rumalutur, a head of the neighborhood unit (RT) in Wailey hamlet.

The Amalatu Mini SPBU is the 25th such gas station established in a remote area across the archipelago. The government has targeted building a total of 54 mini SPBU across remote areas until 2019.

The newly inaugurated mini gas station has three storage tanks, each of which has a capacity of 20 liters of fuel. (foy/ary)
