he State Logistics Agency (Bulog) said on Monday that food stocks would last until the end of the year, including during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
"The rice stock is enough to keep the price stable. As of today, we have 1.2 million tons [of rice]," Bulog president director Djarot Kusumayakti said at his office in Jakarta.
According to a survey conducted by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2015, Indonesians consume 27 million tons of rice annually or 2.25 million tons monthly. Bulog is not the sole distributor of food, as private companies also oversee food stocks.
Bulog procurement director Tri Wahyudi Saleh said the majority of rice was low to medium quality, including the rice to be distributed to low-income families with a government subsidy. "Out of 1.2 million tons, the premium stock is only 100 tons," he said.
Djarot said that Bulog currently had 400,000 tons of sugar in stock, higher than the monthly national consumption of 240,000 tons.
Meanwhile, for cooking oil, the agency had 2.2 million liters, Djarot said, adding that it was enough to meet the demand until the end of 2017.
As for meat, he said, Bulog had 16,000 tons, most of which was buffalo meat the agency imported from India. (bbn)
