A 19-year-old girl from Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, has been reunited with her family after being separated for three years.

In a press statement received by The Jakarta Post on Saturday morning, the girl, identified as S, came to Jakarta to work as a domestic assistant.

She, however, was not able to communicate with her family after allegedly being mistreated by her employer. She also received only a Rp 700,000 (US$51) monthly salary, far lower than the Rp 2 million promised by her employer.

She managed to escape from the house where she worked, but ended up on the streets before officers from the Jakarta Social Affairs Agency brought her to Perlindungan Bakti Kasih Social House, in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

The social house director Hariyanto said the agency's officers had counselling session with S to learn about her background.

After finding out where she was from, the officers spread S’ photo in a Whatsapp group and Facebook among people from Flores.

The information about S was ultimately received by her family who later contacted the social house and picked S up.

“She has now been reunited with her family,” Hariyanto said. (rdi)
