he Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has called the heavy rainfall, which inundated many areas across the capital on Monday, "extreme" and unanticipated.
"It was beyond our predictions. I was in a meeting when the heavy rainfall occurred. Yesterday, the BMKG did not tell me anything like this," Jakarta BPBD head Jupan Royter said on Monday night, referring to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.
He added that no casualties had yet been reported to the agency.
He claimed that officers on duty from various agencies had made great efforts to mitigate the effects of the rainfall, which persisted for two hours and was accompanied by strong winds.
Jakarta saw one of the worst floods in recent months on Monday, when the heavy rains and wind toppled several trees and inundated many areas, leading to prolonged disruption to traffic and public transportation. A dam in Jati Padang area in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, collapsed.
Jupan said Governor Anies Baswedan had reminded all working units in the administration to be vigilant for any potentially dangerous scenarios.
"On Nov. 18, the governor convened a meeting with all working unit heads in the city and told us to be on alert during December, because we will have some big events such as Christmas and New Year's Eve," he said. (fac)
