he Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) plans to summon representatives of publishing company PT Yudhistira, the publisher of social science textbooks for six graders, which referred to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
KPAI commissioner for education Retno Listyarti said the circulation of textbooks that contained inaccurate information or data was not something new.
“This has happened several times. It shows that the supervision of textbooks, especially those for elementary school students, is weak,” Retno said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Wednesday.
She further said that KPAI had also found inappropriate content in textbooks, such as material related to violence and pornography, but by naming Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel, the publisher touched on a very sensitive religious issue.
Retno added that the Education and Culture Ministry’s center for curriculum and books was responsible for monitoring the content of textbooks.
“If it is proven that there was negligence on the ministry’s part, then it [the center for curriculum and books] must be accountable [for the error],” she said.
Retno said KPAI was scheduled to question PT Yudhistira’s representatives about its process of publishing textbooks, including the writing and editing stages.
“We will summon them for a questioning at KPAI next Monday,” she added.
The government and a number of organizations, including Indonesia’s two largest Islamic groups, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, have condemned United States President Donald Trump’s controversial acknowledgement of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and his decision to move the US embassy to the Jewish state from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
