R

esidents of Tasikmalaya in West Java have returned to their homes to go about their daily activities, hours after leaving in a hurry in the middle of the night.

They had fled following a tsunami warning triggered by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake that had struck the southern part of Java late on Friday night.

The head of the Pemayang Fishermen Community, Sana, said dozens of families living near the shore had been evacuated shortly after the first tremor shook the area.

“Until now, people are still being alert by keeping their eyes on the sea,” he was quoted as saying by the Antara newswire.

The quake damaged at least 18 houses, a school and two hospitals in Tasikmalaya, the West Java Search and Rescue Agency reported. The tremor affected several other cities, such as Pangandaran, Ciamis, Banjar, Garut, Cilacap, Kebumen, Pekalongan, Banyumas, Brebes and Banjarnegara. (vla/dmr)
