Indonesian startup goes eco-friendly with edible cup

Ever wondered what it would be like to literally eat your cup while drinking from it?

Established in 2016, Jakarta-based startup Evoware has produced several eco-friendly products, including an edible seaweed-based cup called “Ello Jello.”

Available in a range of colors, “Ello Jello” may sound like a jelly-based cup, but Evoware co-founder David Christian said it had a firmer structure that allowed it to hold hot liquids.

“We don’t use any artificial sweeteners and preservatives. [The cup] takes 40 minutes to make,” David said, adding that the company could create 100 cups at a time depending on the mold.

“Ello Jello” is available in several different flavors, including orange, lychee, green tea and peppermint, and can last up to seven days when being stored in the fridge.

Europalia Indonesia to showcase post-Reform films

The 2017 Europalia Arts Festival Indonesia is slated to run until Jan. 21, 2018 in Europe and features Indonesia as the guest country.

The final round will showcase 30 feature films, 12 documentaries and 10 short films that explore Indonesia on Jan. 9-23 at two venues: the Centre of Fine Arts (BOZAR) and Cinéma Vendôme in Brussels, Belgium.

Film curator Nan Achnas said during last week’s Film Discussion Workshop that the Indonesian contemporary film festival program will highlight movies that were made after the Reform Movement that brought down former president Soeharto in 1998.

Nan explained that the movies were selected to present milestones of the post-Soeharto era. The period was important, as Indonesians had not seen any “projected images” of themselves on the big screen because of a hiatus that lasted a decade prior to the Reform era.

Sheila Majid to hold concert in Jakarta in January

Malaysian singer Sheila Majid is set to hold a world tour next year with a stopover in Jakarta on Jan. 20.

As reported by tempo.co, Jakarta will be the second city on her world tour, before Majid continues on to Singapore.

“Jakarta, Indonesia is like a second home to me,” Majid told tempo during an interview in Jakarta on Friday.

Majid said the series of concerts would be her first tour, as the 52-year-old singer has previously only performed by invitation.

Her concert in Indonesia is slated to be held at JIExpo Kemayoran in Central Jakarta, with ticket prices ranging from Rp 550,000 (US$25.80) to Rp 3.5 million.

Five reasons to spend winter holiday in the French Riviera

Known for its world-famous glamor, the French Riviera is packed with tourists and celebrities alike in July and August. Soaking up the sun while enjoying the irresistible aura of the Mediterranean Sea has always been depicted flawlessly in Hollywood movies, and this has given the area its reputation as an A-list vacation spot. However, if you find going to the South of France in the summer a little too “cliché,” why not go in the winter? Here are five reasons why a winter break along the Côte d’Azur could be the perfect holiday option.

The Nice Christmas market

Every region has its own Christmas market in the French Riviera, with the one in Nice running from Dec. 2 until Jan. 1, 2018 in the town’s main square, Place Massena, every day, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Find traditional snacks such as candy apples, candy canes and delicious pastries to satisfy your sweet tooth, and warm up with a cup of the tasty vin chaud (warm wine brewed with spices). Enjoying the panoramic view of Nice from the Ferris wheel can be a one-of-a-kind experience and for those traveling with children, a classic merry-go-round and bouncy castles are available in the children’s area. Personalized and homemade gifts are also available at reasonable prices, perfect as thematic souvenirs for the ones you leave back home.
