he Jakarta Public Housing Agency has recorded Rp 35.9 billion (US$2.6 million) in outstanding rent from the city’s low-cost rental apartments (Rusunawa).
The agency’s head of public role development, Surahman, said on Monday the figure was an accumulation of unpaid rent from 24 apartments as of January this year.
“The overdue rent keeps increasing. If tenants pay their fees after the 20th of each month, they are categorized as overdue, which will incur additional fines,” said Surahman, as quoted by kompas.com.
The top three on the list are Rusunawa Marunda in North Jakarta and Rusunawa Pinus Elok and Rusunawa Pulo Gebang in East Jakarta.
Out of the 2,604 tenants in Rusunawa Marunda, 2,096 have yet to pay rent totaling Rp 10.5 billion. Meanwhile, 578 tenants out of 800 in Rusunawa Pinus Elok owe a total of Rp 5.4 billion and in Rusunawa Pulo Gebang, 654 out of 720s owe Rp 4.2 billion.
“Several overdue tenants, who qualify for aid, receive full financial support from the Jakarta Muslim Charitable Donations Board. We are currently working on a gubernatorial regulation that will include support for veterans, the elderly and people with disabilities,” said Surahman. (jlm)
