C

oordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan met with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono at his office in Jakarta on Monday to discuss the progress of several cooperation projects between the two countries.

Luhut said during the meeting that Kono reaffirmed his country’s commitment to a number of projects, including the Patimban Port project in Subang, West Java, the MRT in Jakarta and the Jakarta-Surabaya medium-speed railway and aquaculture projects in Natuna, Riau Islands.

The two ministers also talked about a revision to the Indonesia Japan-Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA) and several vocational education projects to improve human resources in Indonesia, particularly outside of Java, Luhut said.

He said the Japanese government also expressed interest in investing in the trans-Sumatra toll road project, particularly the Kayu Putih-Medan section.

“The (Japanese government) has established tax forces to coordinate with us in dealing with the projects,” said Luhut after the meeting as reported by kontan.co.id.

He said as Japan had been involved in many strategic projects in the country, it could help local administrations to improve the quality of their human resources.

For the Patimban seaport project, the government said it would hold a limited Cabinet meeting to discuss a plan to integrate the Bekasi, Karawang and Purwakarta (Bekapur) industrial zones in West Java.

“So [in the future], the output of industries in integrated Bekapur industrial zones could be shipped from Patimban Port, not only the Tanjung Priok economic port [in North Jakarta],” he said. (bbn)
