taff from the Jakarta Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and the West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency spotted crocodiles five times in the Grogol River in West Jakarta during an ongoing search on Thursday.
Three sightings of crocodiles on the river had been reported on Wednesday, however, searches for the crocodiles were unsuccessful, BKSDA official Bambang Yudi said.
The agencies searched for the crocodiles in the river under the railway at Grogol Station in West Jakarta.
“From our observation, we have [spotted crocodiles] five times during the morning and afternoon,” Bambang said on Thursday as reported by kompas.com.
He said the agencies spotted a 2.5-meter crocodile at 7.20 a.m. and another 1.2-meter one at 9.30 a.m.
“At 10.30 a.m. the fire and rescue agency team spotted another crocodile on the left bank of the river and another one nearby not long after. The last time we spotted a crocodile was at 1 p.m.,” he said.
He said the second day’s search was hindered by crowds around the search locations.
“A lot of residents watched and threw [objects at the crocodiles]. The crocodiles appeared on the surface but dived into the river again as they were alarmed,” he said.
A crocodile was spotted in the waters off North Jakarta under Pondok Dayung dock on June 14, and on June 15, a member of the Navy who was on patrol in the dock saw the crocodile again and shot at it. That crocodile has not been seen since. (ami)
