A number of people performed eclipse prayers at Istiqlal Grand Mosque, Central Jakarta in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
The largest mosque in Southeast Asia hosted the eclipse prayers at 3:15 a.m., Syamsuri, a mosque staff member, said as quoted by antaranews.com. At that time, the moon was at its total eclipse and appeared in a deep red color.
Seen among the prayers was Akhdiat, a resident of Pasar Baru, Central Jakarta, who said he had taken his family to the mosque to witness the eclipse and pray.
“After the eclipse prayer,s we went to see the eclipse again while waiting for morning prayers,” he said.
He also said watching the rare astronomy phenomenon was a nice weekend pastime.
People also performed eclipse prayers at Amir Hamzah Mosque within the Taman Ismail Marzuki compound, where thousands of Jakartans gathered to observe the eclipse hosted by the Jakarta Planetarium and observatories.
The blood moon eclipse was the longest total eclipse in the 21st century. The eclipse lasted six hours and 17 minutes, while the total eclipse lasted 103 minutes.
It was forecast that the next and longer eclipse would occur on June 9, 2123. (gis)
