ambodia's education ministry has shortened the school day by one hour to help students cope with a heat wave that has pushed temperatures as high as 43 degrees Celsius (109.4 degrees Fahrenheit).
Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron signed the rule into effect Monday. It will remain in place until the cooling rains being. The rainy season is expected later this month.
Southeast Asia is enduring its hottest, longest heat wave in years.
Neighboring Thailand had an average peak temperature each day in April above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), with the mercury spiking one day to 44.3 degrees C (111.7 F) — just short of the all-time record.
