Secret Retreats launches charity campaign to support Inle Lake region

acations can be more meaningful when you know you are contributing to a good cause at the same time, and there are more options available now for travelers who wish to do just that.  

More than 100 independently owned boutique hotels, restaurants, and cruises united under the Secret Retreats collection have taken action to encourage responsible and sustainable tourism. They mainly focus on supporting their communities and protecting the environment.

Secret Retreats will launch its 2018 campaign in June to support the Myanmar-based Inle Heritage Foundation. Established by Yin Myo Su, Inle Heritage is a non-profit organization that aims to preserve the cultural and natural wealth of the Inle region. The foundation also helps the region to thrive as a place to visit, work and live.

Yin Myo Su is also the managing director of several Secret Retreats member properties in Myanmar, namely Inle Princess Resort, Inle Heritage Stilt Houses and Mrauk U Princess.

Meanwhile, in 2017, Secret Retreats’ charity campaign supported the Misool Foundation, dedicated to protecting some of the world’s richest reefs in Raja Ampat, Papua. Dubbed an innovative foundation, Misool has successfully promoted sustainable tourism and community-based environmental conservation through its protected 300,000-acre marine park.

The Secret Retreats family supported the foundation through charity dinners led in partnership with Secret Tables chefs, special guest chef experiences onsite at Misool. There was also a six-month fund-raising initiative involving members. Secret Retreats then distributed the donations to strengthen the impact.

Following this first annual charity campaign, more than US$ 15,000 has been raised for the Misool Foundation.

Sustainable and responsible tourism have always been part of the Secret Retreats’ ethos.

“With the new annual campaign, we are able to harness the collective power and support of our community. Not only to raise awareness […] but to also provide concrete monetary support,” said Secret Retreats managing director Stéphane Junca.

He went on to say that 2017 was just the beginning and that his side was looking forward to increasing efforts and donations this year to support the Inle Heritage Foundation. (mut)
