Electronic money and payment solutions platform GoPay is Indonesia’s most used form of e-money, a recent survey by digital research firm Populix has found.

The survey, titled “Consumer Preferences Toward Banking and e-Wallet Apps” involved 1,000 respondents aged 18 to 55 in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang, and Medan.

The survey found that 88 percent of the respondents listed GoPay as their electronic money platform of choice.

Moreover, the survey highlighted the rising trend of digital payments, especially through electronic money, which is increasingly becoming the payment method of choice for the general public.

According to the survey, the majority of respondents used electronic money around two to three times a week. Approximately 85 percent of them used the fintech service to shop on e-commerce platforms and 71 percent used it for online transportation.

The findings are consistent with the trend shown by GoPay's internal data. GoPay managing director Budi Gandasoebrata said almost 60 percent of transactions on the Gojek application utilized GoPay, with 85 percent of electronic money transactions on Tokopedia using GoPay as well.

“It is safe to say that both third-party survey findings and our internal data demonstrate GoPay's superiority and leadership as the community's preferred payment method. This achievement further spurs us to continue to improve GoPay services and innovation, so we can continuously provide the best digital money transaction experience for consumers," he said.

Previously, GoPay took the top position in the Gen Z E-Money category at the 2022 Youth Choice Award (YCA) held by Marketeers, a survey that involved 1,500 students from 35 universities located in major Indonesian cities.

A promising future for digital payments

In addition to providing insights on Indonesia's current fintech trends, the Populix survey also shines light on the future of digital payments in Indonesia. When asked about their reasons for using cashless payment, 81 percent of the respondents said it was hassle-free, followed by 80 percent saying it was well-integrated with e-commerce and 79 percent mentioning that it was easy to use.

Among those who used e-wallets, 56 percent said they would use digital payment instruments more often in the future, while 42 percent predicted there would be not much difference in terms of the frequency of using it.

Budi expressed his hope that the various advantages offered by digital payments would support national economic growth.

“As we move forward from the pandemic, GoTo Financial is working hand-in-hand with the government to accelerate the national economic recovery. Additionally, as more people get more familiar with e-wallets, we hope this positive trend will encourage them to use other fintech services and feel the benefits of the digital economy,” he added.
