he government has launched the PeduliLindungi application to optimize public health protection and the public is encouraged to participate by downloading and using the app. The usage of digital technology is expected to ease and shorten the flow of information, and thus make it more effective, adaptive and adoptable to various sectors.
Furthermore, digital technology plays an important role in guiding distance and location, which is an important feature in curbing COVID-19.
“The application of digital technology in supporting the health protocols and testing, tracing and treatment [3T] implementation is one of the crucial strategies in pandemic control.” Communications and Information Technology Minister Johnny G. Plate said in a press statement sent to The Jakarta Post on Monday.
“Thus, the people will also need to adapt, familiarizing themselves with digital technology on a daily basis,” he said.
He added that the primary function of the PeduliLindungi application is for the people’s own protection and those around them. The government has built a system that allows tracing and tracking through the PeduliLindungi application. The government has been using the system during the implementation of social restrictions. Among the functions is the screening of those seeking to enter a location. Through the PeduliLindungi app, one’s vaccination status can be detected, as well as COVID-19 test results or any close contacts with a COVID-19 patient.
Six sectors have become the focus of the utilization of the PeduliLindungi application’s screening function, namely, trade (shopping centers, modern and traditional markets); transportation (land, sea and air); tourism (hotels, restaurants and events/shows); offices and factories (state-owned, private, bank, large factories and MSMEs); religious sites (mosques, churches, temples, monasteries and other religious places); and finally education (kindergartens, elementary, junior and senior high schools and universities).
As an example anyone seeking to enter a shopping mall must use the PeduliLindungi application to maintain health protocols. A visitor is mandated to check in with the PeduliLindungi app, have their body temperature checked at the gate and get a barcode that matches their vaccination history. A green barcode is for vaccinated visitors (with a minimum of the first shot), not infected with COVID-19 and not a close contact.
Those who are labeled with the green barcode are allowed to enter the mall, while those labelled with the yellow barcode, for unvaccinated visitors, not infected with COVID-19 and not a close contact, will also be allowed to enter the mall.
But those labeled with a red barcode, meaning COVID-19 infected or having close contact status, will not be allowed to enter the mall.
“The health agencies will conduct random checks on health-protocol compliance and will take action if health-protocol violations occur,” Johnny said.
Currently, the policy has been implemented in 250 locations such as shopping malls, restaurants, banks, hospitals, hotels and offices. The government plans to expand the scope by accelerating awareness of the PeduliLindungi app in public facilities.
“It is expected that people will be able to use the app in 500 public facilities by the end of August,” Johnny said.
Istiqlal Mosque has been organizing Friday prayers by obliging the congregation to show vaccine certificates, which are downloadable through the PeduliLindungi application. Besides its screening function, the app can also be used as a requirement for departures from airports. The app can control access to the terminals and check-in counters and as a health-validation process for passengers. Through its implementation airports could see fewer people in queuing areas and thus support the health-protocol implementation.
Some 28.6 million users have downloaded the PeduliLindungi app through Apps Store and Google Play Store. The government has vowed to safeguard the program integrity so it can help protect the community and is in the process of migrating data from the PeduliLindungi app, Silacak of the Health Ministry and PCare (BPJS) to cloud kominfo.
“The technical migration will be completed by the end of August and the three applications will be continuously developed to serve in our fight to curb COVID-19 transmission,” said Johnny.
