uman Initiative welcomed in the holy month of Ramadan by holding a bike ride as part of its charity event, Kejar Pahala Ramadan (Chase the Rewards of Ramadan), last Sunday (27/03/2022) in Jakarta. Similar events were also held in 13 different locations across the country by other branches of Human Initiative.

Attendees were invited to bike or run from the starting line at the LRT station in Tebet, and finish the race at Menara Hijau MT Haryono, where drinks and refreshments were prepared. Runners and bikers were given merchandise to give out to bystanders along the route.

Alongside the fun biking and running activities, there was also a tausyiah (a sermon on the importance of good deeds) ahead of Ramadan

The event also featured the symbolic act of giving 1,000 packages to orphans and children who are less fortunate, one of the many agendas lined up by Human Initiative for the month of Ramadan.

But before the distribution took place, the event kicked off with two welcoming speeches by Tomy Hendrajati and Fahmi Saimima, the resident of Human Initiative and general chairman of Bike to Work Indonesia respectively.

“Human Initiative is a kind of humanitarian agency,” Fahmi said. Hinting at more collaborations to come in the future, he noted that the event could help “cultivate biking in Indonesia.”

The launch of the ceremony was followed by the opening speech, with squad leader Mardi Sahendra as main speaker to educate attendees about the work that Human Initiative Indonesia has been doing and the work that will take place during Ramadan to ensure that everyone can enjoy the holy month.

“Under the umbrella campaign, we want to give to those in need, to make the public happy by giving to those who need it most,” he explained. The three main programs for this year’s Ramadan are Berbagi Ifthar (sharing food to break the fast in the evening), Berbagi Bingkisan (the act of giving groceries) and lastly Berbagi Sedekah (sharing alms) for those who prefer to donate money online or offline. Another initiative, classed as the supporting program, collects donations based on requests made in an agreement between donors and the Human Initiative. These however, are not raised as part of the Ramadan 2022 program campaign.

Mardi further clarified that the price of each product had been determined, with Rp 38,000 (US$2.65) for each evening meal, Rp 375,000 for each grocery pack and Rp 200,000 for those who prefer to donate monetarily. They were delighted to know that they have helped over 202 people so far with the three main programs.

A special press conference was available for media attending the event that have signed an MoU with Human Initiative as media partners, including The Jakarta Post. The press conference was held to officially announce the program launch of Bulan Kita Berbagi (the month we share). It was explained that for the past 23 years, the organization has always championed three pillars among others; empowerment, disaster mitigation and child protection.

“This is a special chance for Indonesia to share and to give back,” Tomy said during the press conference. Mardi concluded that the organization felt that orphans were a marginalized group among the most needed, which is why the Human Initiative was willing to do more to help them.
