T

he Riau Islands Police have detained one of their own officers for allegedly extorting a local billiard hall owner through a staged drug raid carried out with several Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel.

Riau Islands Police Internal Affairs Division (Propam) Head Eddwi Kurnoanto said the officer, identified as THS, is a member of the force’s Narcotics Division.

“THS has been detained for an indefinite period. We are conducting an intensive investigation to uncover all the facts and verify the victim’s allegations regarding this serious violation,” Eddwi told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Eddwi vowed that the police would take firm action should the officer be proven guilty of extortion and abuse of power.

“Our commitment is clear, there is no place for rogue officers in the Riau Islands Police. If proven guilty, he will face the strictest disciplinary and legal sanctions in accordance with the law,” he said.

According to the victim, Budi Jauhari, the incident took place on Oct. 16, when eight individuals, including THS, arrived at the commercial building where he lives and operates a billiard hall.
