Ensuring security by fostering interagency collaboration

T

he Customs and Excise Office is one of the institutions with the authority to enforce the law, specifically in customs and related fields. The office is not alone in carrying out its duties to ensure the protection of consumers and the greater public.

In order to enhance maritime protection within Indonesian borders, the Customs and Excise Office has partnered with other agencies, including the Ambon Class I Harbormaster and Port Authority (KSOP Kelas I Ambon) and Water and Air Police (Polairud) units in Batam, the Riau Islands, and Belawan Port in Medan, North Sumatra.

"To heighten interagency synergy in protecting the waters of Ambon, Batam and Belawan, the Customs and Excise Office is coordinating with the head of KSOP Kelas I Ambon and the Polairud in the Riau Islands and Belawan in surveillance through joint marine patrols," said Hatta Wardhana, the head of the Public Relations and Customs Counseling sub-directorate.

Hatta added that the marine patrols were also coordinated with other law enforcement agencies to monitor international waters to ensure national security. The surveillance operations were expected to have a positive impact on each participating agency in achieving their organizational goals.

“This coordination focuses on certain issues in a number of areas. In Belawan, the focus is on supervising [shipments] of cooking oil, CPO [crude palm oil] and derivative [products] as well as monitoring livestock exports and imports due to the spread of foot and mouth disease [FMD].

“Meanwhile, in Batam and Ambon, the focus is on monitoring the territorial waters of the Riau Islands and the island of Ambon," Hatta explained.

He emphasized that the Customs and Excise Office was committed to enhancing interagency synergy with other branches of law enforcement in upholding the sovereign rights of Indonesia and to protect the Indonesian people.

The office expected to develop and realize common goals through building strong collaboration and solidarity between law enforcement agencies to uphold justice and maintain legal certainty in Indonesia.
