The rise in public mobilization and consumption is a boon for national payment channels.
he rise in public mobilization and consumption is a boon for national payment channels. People have begun to embrace cashless transactions using the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS). The trend could be seen at BNI Java Jazz Festival 2022, where payments via the QRIS method saw an increase of 417.6 percent.
Throughout the event, the volume of transactions was recorded at Rp 5.7 billion (USD 380 thousand), an increase of 21.9 percent from BNI Java Jazz 2020. Committee chairman II of the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI) Abraham Josef Adriaansz noted that the increase in volume of QRIS transactions was also due to its facilitation of multi-instrument fund sources, ranging from server-based electronic money (UE), debit and credit cards and more.
“There is a sharp rise in [transaction] volume after the pandemic. The future development of digital payment systems will continue to grow and diversify with adequate security,” he explained.
He also highlighted the increase in BNI QRIS transactions, which he saw as the result of BNI’s innovations to support QRIS usage. Accordingly, the bank has received appreciation from the public. “BNI has of course taken advantage of the QRIS system and the diversity of funding sources. It has gained quite the positive response from the public,” added Abraham.
Chairman of ASPI Santoso Liem also observed that the increase in QRIS usage was due to its convenience and easy access with smartphones, especially taking into consideration the mass penetration of mobile phones in Indonesia. It is no longer an impossibility that QRIS can be used for transfers and withdrawals in the future.
“Using smartphones as issuance is certainly easier than using a family card and debit cards. We believe that since the QRIS is dynamic, it can be used not just for payments, but also for transfers and withdrawing cash in the future on a massive scale,” Santoso explained.
BNI corporate secretary Mucharom stated that the increase in digital transactions at the jazz music event was observed across all products. Transactions with the BNI Tapcash electronic money, for example, rose 12.9 percent, while the use of debit cards increased by 53 percent and credit cards by 53.4 percent.
“We are satisfied with the conclusion of BNI Java Jazz 2022. Right now, we are seeing society adapt to digital transactions at a more mature level. This achievement will be the foundation of BNI’s better performance in the second quarter of this year.”
Mucharom continued that during the biggest jazz concert in Indonesia, BNI strengthened the bank-end of its information technology alongside its digital channels. It helped encourage the smooth running of the event’s transaction bubble. Furthermore, the payment ecosystem encouraged concert-goers to use various promotions and other attention-grabbing programs.
“With the combination of operational system and the right programs, BNI has made itself one of the pioneers in digital banking to answer transaction needs better,” he concluded.“
