rs Preeti Bhart Sheri, 56, an educator at a local secondary school in Singapore is an epitome of lifelong learning. She teaches geography and social studies and has pursued a number of academic qualifications in order to enhance her teaching skills.
Mrs Sheri earned her first degree in Geography and English Language at 22, followed by a postgraduate diploma in education at 23 at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NIE NTU, Singapore). She found the learning useful, and it helped her by equipping her with the pedagogical skills necessary to engage young minds. In her interaction with some of the lecturers, Mrs Sheri was impressed by their commitment and knowledge of Humanities, a subject that she was passionate about. Their willingness to discuss and share their expertise touched her. She knew that she could learn more from them and be a better Humanities educator. It became clear to her that pursuing her master’s degree at NIE would allow her to be both a learner and collaborator to improve the education fraternity in Singapore.
In 2020, she returned to NIE to pursue a master’s degree in Humanities Education.
The Master of Arts in Humanities Education (MAHE) programme is designed for humanities educators and professionals in related fields who are interested in advancing their professional knowledge through disciplinary and inter-disciplinary explorations of humanities education in Geography, History, and Social Studies.
“Having left school thirty years ago, I was not confident of my abilities as an older adult learner,” Mrs Sheri shared. “However, my fears were unfounded. NIE’s lecturers provided us with comprehensive reading lists, good lecture notes and were prompt in responding to our request for feedback on our academic writing.”
NIE offers a range of graduate programmes designed to address the unique needs of adult learners. These programmes are specially designed to enhance students’ knowledge and competencies in their respective fields and industries. The Master of Arts in Humanities Education, Master of Arts (Educational Management), and Master of Science (Science of Learning) are just a few examples of the programmes available. These programmes provide opportunities for educators and professionals in education settings, such as education, healthcare, management, military, and human resources, to come together and learn from one another.
“I enjoyed having classmates from many countries. The diverse backgrounds enriched my learning as we worked together on projects,” Mrs Sheri fondly recalled.
When asked if her experience in NIE had been beneficial to her in bringing changes in her work, Mrs Sheri said, “There were two key benefits. First, is the amount of research by NIE that could be found in the areas I was interested in which supported my role as a Head of Department. I could apply what I had learnt at my workplace using research-based evidence. Secondly, I was equipped with new and updated knowledge that had helped me engage both my colleagues and students more effectively.”
Overall, Mrs Sheri’s experience at NIE serves as a reminder that continuing education can greatly enhance one’s career.
