ogyakarta’s Gadjah Mada University (UGM) celebrated the 74th Dies Natalis on Dec. 19, 2023. UGM Rector Prof. dr Ova Emilia, in an open meeting as the pinnacle of the UGM’s 74th Dies Natalis celebration at Graha Sabha Pramana UGM on Dec. 19, emphasized that UGM was transforming and strengthening leadership in science and innovation as the realization of Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, or the three pillars of higher education practice.

This has been carried out to encourage the realization of the Indonesia Emas (Golden Indonesia) 2045 vision in the disruption era. In addition, UGM also expanded partnerships and collaborations with industries to develop innovative research to drive the downstream sector to fulfill various needs of the public.

“Contemporary dynamics and disruptions in every sector at the national, regional and global level require universities to play an active role and adapt to the changes in a quick manner. For that reason, UGM has invigorated transdisciplinary research, downstream industry and policy advocacies, especially related to the issues of climate change, the renewable energy transition, food sovereignty and health innovations,” explained the rector, adding that UGM was also actively involved in initiating policy forums aimed at seeking solutions to various national and global issues.

According to the rector, research-based innovations undertaken by UGM are more than just scientific development but are concrete contributions to resolving public concerns about the national agenda.

To reinforce the achievement of the mission, UGM is currently building the Creativity and Innovation Arena (GIK) as a resource network. The presence of GIK, with a primary focus on sociotechnical entrepreneurship, will serve as a creativity hub that facilitates the young generation with diverse knowledge and future skills, enabling them to be easily adaptable and contributive in the fast-changing era.

As for developing the human capital, UGM is developing an Innovative Learning Ecosystem (EPI), reinvigorating the Indonesia Smart Card (KIP) Kuliah program, the High Education Affirmation (Adik 3T) program and various other affirmation programs. These are conducted as a form of UGM’s commitment to facilitate the young generation from various remote regions and groups across the country so that they can access high-quality higher education.

Under the framework of developing an inclusive, environmentally friendly, people friendly, healthy and socially responsible campus, UGM owns a facility called the Well-being Center to maintain the mental health of the academic community. It also facilitates and accompanies UGM’s UKM Peduli Difabel and includes a spiritual facility in the campus environment to accommodate spiritual activities by adherents of Catholicism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and Khonghucu (Confucianism) in the campus area.

“UGM also uses a ‘Social Belt’ paradigm to develop a quality learning ecosystem by embracing and giving positive contributions to the people around the campus through Learning and empowering community (KKN-KIBAR) programs, including the implementation of KKN-PPM at the national and international levels,” she said.

UGM is developing a number of flagship translational and trans-disciplinary research programs, ranging from sell-sufficiency in food, medicinal materials, health devices, the energy transition, climate change and environmental adaptation, to sociocultural toughness. The flagship research programs are highly relevant with efforts to answer challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The rector explained UGM’s efforts to confirm itself as a world-class university that is continually driven by increasing scientific publications, either at nationally or internationally reputed journals. UGM is also optimizing the role that Learning Center (LC) as center of learning and muti-disciplinary researches. And, at the same time, supports the development of downstream research.

When it comes to campus management, she continued, UGM continued to encourage digital adaptation as an important element in the higher education management transformation. The UGM Digital Transformation program aims to bolster the achievement of becoming an Intelligent University through enterprise architecture, big data analytics, future skills development, digital smartness and the digital, integrated business process transformation.

In her concluding remarks, the rector underscored several commitments that UGM has made to continue contributing actively to bring positive change through several strategic programs to cope with the challenges to embody the state vision of becoming a self-reliant, sovereign, prosperous, democratic and sustainable country.

First, developing the translational and trans-disciplinary research, designed to produce output directly and have an impact on resolving the issues of food sovereignty, health and energy through research.

Second, developing a dignified and inclusive educational system through digital adaptation in order to engender human capital that is innovative, agile and has a strong nationhood horizon and an entrepreneurial mindset.

Third, strengthening entrepreneurship, partnership and social inclusivity-based community service programs to resolve national agendas that bring global impacts.

Fourth, strengthening collaborations and synergy with businesses, industry circles and communities to turn the university into an accelerator of human resources and economic development and also to reinforce Indonesia’s competitive edge globally.

Fifth, strengthening the role of the university as the guardian of moral and national values to realize Indonesia’s vision of becoming an exemplary democratic, just and prosperous state.

“A number of contributions that UGM has designed and implemented will, hopefully, help Indonesia achieve its goal of being self-reliant, sovereign, prosperous, democratic and sustainable. To that end, we always need support from all parties in developing education, research, the downstream sector and social advocacy, which impacts global and humanitarian issues as pivotal pillars of the higher education transformation,” she said.

On the occasion, Prof. Ir. Alva Edy Tontowi also presented a speech titled “Digital Transformation: Harmonizing Innovations and Humanity”.
