new study predicts that the average cost of data breaches will surpass US$5 million per incident in 2023, with phishing accounting for the majority of the attacks.
Released on Thursday by United States technology company Acronis, the report analyzed the cyberthreat landscape, including ransomware threats, phishing, malicious websites and software vulnerabilities. It also offered a security forecast for 2023.
“The last few months have proven to be as complex as ever, with new threats constantly emerging and malicious actors continuing to use the same proven playbook for big payouts,” said Acronis vice president of cyber protection research Candid Wüest in press statement.
The report found a 60 percent increase in threats from malicious emails and phishing, a kind of cyberattack where attackers send fraudulent messages designed to trick victims into revealing sensitive information or to deploy malicious software.
The researchers found that the share of phishing attacks increased by 130 percent, accounting for 76 percent of all attacks from July to October of this year.
Spam rates rose by more than 15 percent to reach 30.6 percent of all inbound traffic.
In October, US clients experienced the most malware detections, accounting for 22.1 percent of the global figures, followed by Germany with 8.8 percent and Brazil with 7.8 percent.
