Netflix has announced the cast for the upcoming live-action One Piece series.

Five actors were announced as the main characters of the series. Iñaki Godoy (Go, Youth!, Who Killed Sara?) will play the role of Monkey D. Luffy, Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter’s Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Fear Street’s Emily Rudd as Nami, Greenleaf’s Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Villain’s Taz Skylar as Sanji.

The five will become members of the famous Straw Hat Pirates from the original One Piece Japanese comic book or manga.

One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda also serves as the executive producer for the series. On a special note relayed by Netflix to fans of the manga, Oda said it had been a while since his collaboration with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios was announced before the cast was finally revealed on Tuesday.

"How many years has it been since [the adaptation plan] was announced, right? I know, I know! But rest assured, we've been making steady progress all along!" Oda wrote.

"It's not easy when you’re working with people from different cultures! But it's precisely that process that can yield something special!"

The manga creator also shared his views on the main cast of the One Piece live-action series, who was chosen after “numerous discussions involving people around the world”.

"Their face, the size of their mouths and hands, their aura, the way they carry themselves, their voice, their acting skills, their height, the balance amongst the Straw Hat Crew," Oda wrote, listing the good points of the cast.

The live-action series will be directed by Steven Maeda, who also serves as cowriter and executive producer along with Matt Owens.

The announcement of the cast followed the news of the series’ title and logo on Sept. 3, coinciding with the release of the manga's 100th book volume. The announcement of a One Piece live-action adaptation was revealed in January last year.

One Piece is a best-selling manga series. It has sold more than 490 million copies worldwide since its first publication in 1997. The manga was then made into an animated movie by Toei Animation in 1999.

The live-action adaptation will reportedly have 10 episodes for its first season.
